requesting advice from trans people living in Scotland re: name change :boosts_ok_gay:

hi there, the CW pretty much covers everything, but to be more specific I'm looking for assistance parsing the Scottish government website on how to change my name (nrscotland.gov.uk/registration) or tips on how to go about changing my name

all and any boosts are greatly appreciated 💖

@wenom I can't seem to parse it either.

You can safely ignore the part about who may apply, and the marrige and divorce parts (although why is changing your name under those circumstances so easy, but not any other?)

I know that it has to be done physically by post though.

You'll want leaflet 1 (information), and Form 24 (the one for people over 16 changing their own name) Potentially PRF, but I don't think that should matter at all anyway for what you want to change your name for (I think that one is where a child wants to assume a certain parents name)

I hope I've somewhat helped you Fenn <3

@wenom if you live near a larger town, my advice is to prepare four statutory name change certificates, fill them in and then go to the sheriff's court and have a justice of the peace witness you signing them and sign them themselves.

@wenom so idk much about scotland specifically, but it seems it's advisable to go through this procedure as it makes it public information that you changed your name (idk exactly what that means, I'm sorry). however if the £40 is an issue, or you'd rather not make it public, and you're looking to the end of changing your name on your passport, you should be able to do it with an unenrolled deed poll via (...)

@wenom (...) the method in one of my pinned posts! it kinda depends where you're trying to change your name, there is no central like, database of names so you have to change it separately on your passport, licence/provisional if you have one, and with HMRC, your doctor, student finance, bank, etc etc etc

requesting advice from trans people living in Scotland re: name change :boosts_ok_gay:

@wenom I don't know if that's any help! it's all very dependent on where you're trying to change your name!

@bryn thank you, rowan! it definitely helped out!

@wenom I'm glad!

@wenom So that link is only in the case of you wanting to change your name in the National Records--e.g. if you were born in Scotland and want to change the name on your birth certificate.

@wenom
If you're going to need a name change formalised for stuff like work or bank accounts, you can change it via deed poll or statutory declaration. This will need to be witnessed by a solicitor or notarized but I think that's fairly inexpensive.
